Make your work visible!
Here are five actions to start in your company today
Let’s face it; you spend a lot of time at work. You possibly spend 40 hours per week, maybe more!. Now multiply this by the weeks and years of your service to the company.
In that time, you may have worked with specific departments or peers from across the company but who can say?. This can be true especially for a large company or corporation. Your work has been touched, been acknowledged or has provided value to parts of the company and or some of your peers. But how do you reach everyone and make your work visible to every single person in the company?
Too often, you work in isolation, or maybe you work remotely. You work on your projects that may be useful to solve specific business problems, for particular customers or stakeholders. Much of your work remains invisible and hidden to others. But what if others in your company need your knowledge, skills, experience and work projects?

Make your work visible!
Getting your work across others in the company is where it helps to be transparent and open about what you’re working on. Who you are connecting with and what you are learning about in your organisation could assist others too.
Luckily, with enterprise social networks and collaborative platforms such as MS Teams or Yammer, you don’t have to be invisible. Your voice can be heard across the organisation, and your projects surfaced to parts of the organisation where it is needed the most.
Making your work transparent is quite a big change for most people, and you’ll probably need to create a new daily behaviour pattern. A behaviour that prompts you to share what you’re doing on your enterprise social network. It also means you need to accept that your work will open to interpretation and constructive feedback from others. That can be hard at first, but trust me, receiving the feedback will improve your work.
How to be visible
Here is a list of 5 simple daily steps to make your work visible. You can add these to your MS Outlook To Do. Get daily reminders to show and share your work on your social network. You can do them consecutively throughout the work week, or you can pick and choose which one you like. Alternatively, just do one activity for the entire week until it becomes a habit.
Day 1: Share a Problem that you are experiencing at the moment and seek feedback. Focus on what you are trying to achieve. Why is it a problem for you now? What ideas and insights you would like and how you can help others in return?.
Day 2: Upload a document you are currently working on in its UNFINISHED or DRAFT format and seek feedback. Focus on asking how it can be improved. What is missing and how you are going to use and apply the document once complete. Acknowledge everyone’s responses by liking or replying to their comments.
Day 3: Acknowledge someone who has helped you in the last week to solve a problem. Focus on who they are, what they did to help you out and how you found them. Share an aspect of the result or outcome of that assistance and the benefits to you and the business.
Day 4: Respond to a post with a thoughtful reply. In this activity, ensure that you include specific examples and links to further resources that will assist for every response you make.
Day 5: Go for a coffee with someone in your organisation. If you’ve met a fellow worker online in your enterprise social network, it’s time to meet them in person for a cup of coffee. Make a virtual meeting, a real one for people who are in the same geographical area. Why not take a photo of the meeting and share it online. Don’t forget to introduce them too.
