Success through message integration and projects
To run a successful project, we need to communicate with our organisation. We need to tell people what to expect. A single project can generate a lot of communication.
There may be tasks employees need to complete to prepare for change. We need to coordinate activities for the project. Organisations often run multiple projects and initiatives concurrently, amidst all the “day-to-day” conversations. When projects compete for attention and awareness, people could feel overwhelmed and overlook the important details in messaging.
However, when we talk about the relationships between projects, we increase the visibility and importance of each project through their relationships. Awareness is heightened, and people have a greater chance of remembering different projects by association. A train of thought about one project leads to connections with another project and it’s easier to recall the details because it’s surrounded by context.
Step back for a moment and look at the different projects running in your organisation right now.
Are any of them related to the same strategic goal for the organisation? Identify what the projects have in common. Consider how you might talk about projects together.
Another way to highlight a relationship between projects is to outline their dependencies on each other. Showing one or two relationships between projects is enough. Don’t go overboard. Communicate a few relationships between projects clearly and often.
It is important to make the purpose and goals of the project clear. When people know “why” they are being asked to learn and invest their time, they are more likely to adopt the change. Talking about the relationships between projects answers the question “why are we doing this?” Discussing the relationships links the project to a larger purpose and compounds the value of the connected projects.
In your next communications plan, try to integrate with other projects and note the benefits.
